OpenDrop Goes Infrared: Enabling On-Chip Chemical Analysis

Researchers from the Institute of Analytical Chemistry, Leipzig University have developed an infrared (IR)-transparent digital microfluidic (DMF) chip using the OpenDrop platform. The device allows chemical reactions to be monitored directly on-chip using IR spectroscopy, with both spatial and time resolution. To make this possible, they developed a fabrication method that combines calcium fluoride substrates with thin indium tin oxide (ITO) electrodes, creating a fully functional DMF device that remains transparent in the mid-IR range.
